Recapping the 2009 NFL Draft

While the NFL Draft isn't quite like March Madness in terms of office pool predictions, there is still an element of suspense for most sports fans, especially fans of the National Football League. As a Virginia Tech fan, I wasn't particularly looking forward to this draft because we only had one player that had a legitimate shot at being drafted, unlike previous years where we have average about five players a year and even peaking at nine one season.

This year, the ACC as a whole did quite well with 33 total draft picks. They did especially well in the first round with five players drafted. That was actually two fewer than was predicted by Docsports.com's NFL Mock Draft, which predicted that seven players from the ACC would get the call in the first round. It's clear that Docsports.com's Robert Ferringo felt as I did that the ACC was chalk full of talent this past season. The scary thing is that the ACC is supposed to get better this season ... should be fun!

Of course, the only Virginia Tech Hokie drafted by Victor "Macho" Harris, who was selected by by the Philadelphia Eagles with the 21st pick in the 5th round. Since then, defensive end Orion Martin has signed a free-agent deal with the Miami Dolphins and backup quarterback (and former starter) Sean Glennon reached a deal with the Minnesota Vikings.

I'm at the Virginia Tech women's soccer game watching the Hokies play George Mason. No score at the half. C'mon Hokies!

TheButterRoom.com's Matt Blum Reviews the Band 400 Unit

Great review, Matt! I have never been a big music scene fan, though I do love listening to music. Reading this review has piqued my curiosity in today's non-mainstream music scene, especially considering most of the new stuff I hear these days is complete crap. Geez, I'm becoming my parents!

I am a child of the 80s (b. 1975), but I prefer mostly early- to mid-90s bands like Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Living Colour, Guns 'n Roses, etc. My top three favorite albums of all time are U2's Joshua Tree ('87), Pearl Jam's Ten ('91) and Nirvana's Nevermind ('91).

Ten and Nevermind were albums that defined my generation. Who knew how prophetic "Jeremy" would be so many years later. Today, I have a greater appreciation for the genius behind those groundbreaking albums. Eddie Vedder is a lyrical genius and I have always applauded his stand against MTV and Tickmaster ... those sonsabitches.

Another favorite band/album from the 90s was Seven Mary Three's 1995 American Standard, which in my mind, is one of the most underrated rock albums of my generation. I think they came in on the tail end of the "grunge" era and just missed their window of opportunity. Regardless, I listen to that album at least once a week.

Going back to Matt's review of 400 Unit, I think attending a concert like this would be a welcome departure from my daily routine. Maybe the next time the Mrs. and I get a babysitter we'll head to a concert in some dive bar rather than our usual dinner and a movie. Matt - you, sir, are a musical muse!

I am almost ashamed to admit that I have not been to a concert since July 2006 when I saw Theory of a Deadman in Salem (they are freaking awesome live!). Prior to that I hadn't been to a live concert since a 2000 Foo Fighters show at JMU.

And the ACC Coach of the Year Award Goes To...

When I sat down to write this column, I was going to lead (or “lede” for my fellow press box jockeys) with: “Go ahead and give Seth Greenberg the Atlantic Coast Conference Coach of the Year Award. There isn’t another coach in the ACC that deserves it more.”

But, as I started doing my research, I discovered that there are really three very worthy candidates for the award … if the season were to end today.

The three coaches are Virginia Tech’s Greenberg, miami’s Frank Haith, and wake forest’s Dino Gaudio. Each of these men has taken his team to heights not thought possible before the 2007-08 season tipped off.

The Hokies, hurricanes, and demon deacons were picked to finish 10th, 11th and 12th, respectively, in the ACC prior to the season. As of today, Virginia Tech (8-6, 17-11) is alone in 4th place, while the deacs (6-6, 16-9) are in sixth, and the canes (6-7, 19-6) are in seventh. Tech and wake have a chance to finish 10-6 if they win out, but it will be a more difficult road for the deacons, who finish the season with maryland at home (2/28), then georgia tech (3/1) and Virginia Tech (3/4) on the road, before returning home to close out the season against in-state rival nc state (3/8). miami has three games left: the next two at home against virginia (3/1) and boston college (3/5), and then on the road against florida state (3/8).

Hokies Sweep the Eagles, 67-48

From the team at TechHoops.com:

The Hokies locked up at least a .500 season in ACC play with a win over the iggles Tuesday night. My game ball goes to Lewis Witcher who played like a man possessed tonight. His play has really improved during the last three games and it appears that not only is his confidence growing, but he also seems to be having fun out there.

Raising Your Kid to be A Die Hard Hokie Fan

Fair warning - this is me bragging about my kid because I'm a proud dad, so if that kind of stuff annoys you, hit the "back" button. My son has been to four Virginia Tech mens basketball games this season and loves every minute of it. He already knows the fight song and all of the other popular chants prevalent at Hokie sporting events. This video is of him doing the H-O-K-I-E-S HOKIES! cheer. He's 2-1/2 years old. He sings this ALL THE TIME ... especially on game days!

Greenberg vs. Berman IV: The Brawl on the Call

The feud between Roanoke Times sports writer Mark Berman and Virginia Tech Head Coach Seth Greenberg continued for a fourth straight week (at least that I'm aware of). During Monday's weekly ACC coaches conference call, Mark Berman had the first question...
Berman: "Good afternoon, Seth."

Greenberg: "Mark, this might be the highlight of everyone listening."

Berman: "Uh huh."
